INSPIRATION

Judges 16:23-31.  Samson (sunlight), son of Manoah, a man of the town of Zorah, in the tribe of Dan, on the border of Judah.  The miraculous circumstances of his birth are recorded in Judges 13.  Samson takes his place in Scripture, (1) as a judge – an office which he filled for twenty years; (2) as a Nazarite; and (3) as one endowed with supernatural power by the Spirit of the Lord.  The divine inspiration which Samson received from the Lord granted in him the unique form of vast personal strength, animated by undaunted bravery.  Samson married a Philistine woman whom he had seen at Timnath.  One day on his way to Timnath, he was attacked by a lion, and the Spirit of the God came on him powerfully, and he ripped it open barehanded, like tearing a young goat.  Sometime later as he walked again past the way of where the lion had attacked, he found a swarm of bees in the carcass of the lion – and honey.  He scooped it in his hands and went along eating, but still he told no one.  Upon returning to his house, he found his wife married to another, and was refused permission to see her.  Samson revenged himself by catching three hundred jackals, tying their tails together in pairs, tying a torch of fire to each pair of tails and setting them loose in the Philistine fields of ripe grain, burning everything down to the ground.  The Philistines avenged themselves by burning Samson’s wife and her father to death; but Samson fell upon them in return ruthlessly ripping them limb from limb.  The Philistines then gathered an army to revenge themselves again, however, Samson finding a jawbone of a donkey used it and slew a thousand of the Philistines.  This achievement raised Samson to the position of a judge, which he held for twenty years.  Next he met a woman who lived in the valley of Sorek, named Delilah.  Wearied out with her importunity, he told her all his heart, and while he was asleep she had him shave of his seven locks of hair.  His enemies then pulled his eyes out, bound him in shackles, and ordered him to grind in prison.  Then they held a great festival in the temple of Dagon, to celebrate their victory over Samson.  They brought forth the blind champion to make fun of, and placed him between the pillars which supported the roof that surrounded the court.  Samson asked the young man who was acting as his guide to put him where he could feel the pillars, to rest upon them.  There Samson cried out to God with a wholehearted prayer for God to strengthen him this one last time, to avenge the Philistines for his two eyes; he pushed with all his might upon the two pillars, they gave way and the building came crashing down upon all the people including Samson.  He killed more people in his death than he had killed in his life.

This is a great reminder to us that our true strength comes from God, and to cry out to God wholeheartedly in earnest prayer.
