INSPIRATION

Genesis 32:22-32.  Jacob (heel catcher; supplanter), the second son of Isaac and Rebekah.  He was born with Esau, about 1837 B.C.  He bought the birthright from his brother Esau, which Esau sold to him for a mere pottage of red lentils as he was nearly starving to death (Genesis 25), and afterward acquired the blessing intended for Esau, by practicing a well-known deceit on Isaac (Genesis 27).  Jacob did not obtain the blessing because of his deceit, but in spite of it. That which was promised he would have received in some good way; but Jacob and his mother, distrusting God’s promise, sought the promised blessing in a wrong way, and received with it trouble and sorrow.  At 78 years old, Jacob was sent from the family home to avoid his brother, and to seek a wife among his kindred in Padan-aram (the plain of Syria).  After the lapse of twenty-one years he returned from Padan-aram with two wives, two concubines, eleven sons and a daughter, and many great possessions.  As Jacob was en route to return to his homeland, he sent messengers before him to Esau with many gifts in hope that he would find grace with Esau.  The messengers returned to Jacob with news that Esau also was en route to meet him with four hundred men.  Jacob became greatly afraid and distressed.  Jacob then prayed to God for protection, to deliver him from the hand of his brother Esau.  Jacob then sent a second extravagant set of gifts with his servants to Esau in hope that Esau would accept him.  Afterwards, Jacob rose up at night with his family, and passed over the ford of the Jabbok.  He got them safely across the brook along with all his possessions.  But Jacob stayed behind by himself and that night there appeared to him a man that wrestled with him until the break of day.  When the man saw that he could not get the best of Jacob as they wrestled, he deliberately threw Jacob’s hip out of joint, and asked Jacob to let him go for it was now the break of day.  Jacob replied by saying he would not let him go unless he blessed him.  Then Jacob’s name was changed to Israel, for he had struggled with God and with men, and had prevailed.  Jacob was then blessed.  Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, for he had seen God face-to-face, and his life was preserved.  Jacob died in his 147th year.

This is a great reminder to us as we face fear and distress in our lives to always reach out to God our Father, maker, creator, preserver, steadfastly, as all blessings flow from God.
